More than 1,300 South Australians are employed in the sector - mostly in small businesses with fewer than 20 employees.

Often these retailers are located in large markets among other stallholders, but they're also common in small shopping 'strips' and there's usually one or two in large shopping centres. These businesses have a strong focus on presentation to promote the quality of their product to customers who are mainly buying for personal consumption.

More than 400 different varieties of fruit and vegetables are grown in Australia.

Australians spend more than $4 billion a year with fresh fruit and vegetable retailers.

Place of work: Brighton Foodland
Role: Director

Working in the retail inductry has shown how important it is to be able to deal with all sorts of people and personalities. After finishing school, I began working in the family business that had been in operation for 40 years - at the bottom, sweeping floors! I progressed through each area of the business and fully appreciate the different roles each person plays, which is so important to the success of the business. I am now managing all our key team members which is just as important as controlling the financial side of the organisation. Although I didn't do any formal study, I did specific retail courses related to supermarkets and personal development courses. After 25 years, I still get pleasure from seeing happy staff and satisfied customers, while running a profitable business.

Place of Work: Get Fresh Findon
Role: Owner/Operator
Estimated salary range for this job role: $41-60K

Originally I didn't want to work in retail, however the lifestyle and atmosphere of working with people pulled me to work for the family business and now I am the owner.

To achieve success, I've had to learn the variety of products, gain an understanding of the industry and its culture in order to get the best for the business and my customers.

As the owner of my own business the role varies on a day to day basis from going to the market to buy produce, quality control, stock rotation, customer service and management. My least favourite part of the job is the early starts at the market!

Working in the industry and owning my own business has made me more mature and I now recognise my responsibilities in the business - I'm accountable for what I do and say. I enjoy dealing with a range of people on a daily basis, and I've gained great friendships, some of which are with customers. I'd certainly encourage others to work in the industry as it's varied, there are a lot of opportunities and it's a lifelong career. My advice is to work hard and take the opportunities when you can.
