There are almost 400 approved Community Pharmacies in SA, employing more than 4,400 people.
Dispensing prescription drugs and medicines is a key focus for retail pharmacies and accounts for almost three-quarters of their business.
General retail (such as toiletries, perfumes, cosmetics and gift lines) form the next largest product segment, followed by nonprescription medications (such as mild pain relievers; cold and flu remedies; first-aid supplies) and health products (such as vitamin and mineral supplements). Pharmacy staff have extensive product knowledge to advise customers on the most suitable purchase to assist their ailment or health concern.
Australians spend almost $11.5 billion a year in more than 5,000 pharmacies.
